What We Do

Advanced Healthcare Made Personal

Specialist Anaesthesiologists are expected to have expert knowledge of human physiology, medical physics, and pharmacology, as well as a broad general knowledge of all areas of medicine and surgery in all ages of patients, with a particular focus on those aspects which may impact on a surgical procedure.

The role of specialist anaesthesiologists in ensuring adequate pain relief for patients in the immediate postoperative period, as well as their expertise in regional anaesthesia and nerve blocks, has led to the development of pain medicine as a subspecialty in its own right

The anaesthetist’s role in surgical procedure are:

  • Pre-operative assessment to ensure fitness for both surgery and anaesthesia
  • Prescribing preoperative medication to relieve anxiety  (if required)
  • Administering sedation, regional or general anaesthesia as dictated by the surgical procedure
  • Monitoring vital signs throughout the surgical operation, ensuring adequate anaesthetic depth, adequate analgesia, safety and comfort
  • Anticipating and treating common and rare complications that may arise
  • Prescribing appropriate postoperative medication
  • Immediate post-anaesthesia care, including ICU (if required)
